Mountain bikes can also be hired from our base at lobb fields campsite (under 16 accompanied by an adult) from 8am till 7pm giving you 11 hours of hire time if required, or take the 4 hour half day option to check the surf, or have your bikes delivered to your holiday accommodation (min hire 24hr). Explore some of our local surf breaks and areas of outstanding natural beauty. Including, right on the doorstep, Braunton Burrows the largest sand dune system in the UK! Its uniqueness and bio diversity is recognised in its designation as both a national nature reserve and as a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Well worth seeing! You can cycle through the burrows to Crow Point for views of the Taw and Torridge estuary made famous by Henry Williamsons book Tarka The Otter. From here it’s only a short ride along beautiful river banks to the Tarka trail and easy, traffic free cycling for over 20 miles. It is possible to visit the historical market town of Barnstaple (6 miles) an ancient and busy port in its day with famous pannier market and butchers row still trading the same as they were 150 years ago. From Here head across Barnstaple bridge and toward Bideford (a further 9 miles) along the way stop at other areas of interest, such as Fremington quay a port used to export china clay once a busy and thriving port its now a tranquil area with great views across the estuary towards braunton, an ideal place to stop and have some refreshment at the Quay café (good food) and a look in the Heritage centre. From here it’s back in the saddle (3miles) to Instow, a lovely beachside village, with a choice of pubs and a long sandy beach (no surf.) Where the rivers Taw and Torridge meet. It’s also possible to get a ferry from Instow to Appledore with bike. Another ancient port it oozes ship building history and to this day still builds them. Some great atmospheric pubs can be found here hidden in the maze of alleys and streets including the George which is built into the sea wall (good food good view) The village dates back to Saxon times and is known to have fought and repelled Viking invaders.
